Glass Thickness

What thickness glass do you need?

Flat glass comes in various thicknesses, and it is the difference in thickness that dictates the use of particular glass for a certain application. As logic would suggest, thinner glass is more fragile than thicker. Except as noted, all architectural glass is temperable for safety. Thickness range for glass is:

  • SSB or 3/32" Used in picture frames, not temperable
  • 1/8" Used in storm windows, picture frames, and insulated units
  • 3/16" Used for small table tops (as protective cover), insulated units, single pane window
  • 1/4" Used in table tops (as protective cover), insulated units, interior + exterior door lites, medicine cabinet shelves, framed shower doors
  • 3/8" Used in frameless shower doors, as table tops, glass walls and partitions
  • 1/2" sed in frameless shower doors, as table tops, glass walls and partitions, hand rails
  • 3/4" Used for glass doors, mall fronts, table tops, glass floors
  • 1" Used for glass flooring, stair treads, tables, glass furniture
